This is brilliant, I love it. We've all got to support this campaign.

Campaign to get 'The Hoff' to number one

He's earned cult status thanks to starring roles in the hit TV shows Knight Rider and Baywatch. Now David Hasselhoff's celebrity billing is about to reach new heights thanks to an internet campaign to propel him to the top of the pop charts.

Hasselhoff's music career began in the late 1980s when he recorded the album 'Looking For Freedom', which was hugely popular in Germany. But his latest music offering could reach a wider audience - and get to number one in the UK charts - if organisers of a cyberspace campaign get enough support.

Thousands of emails have been sent to homes and offices across Britain from a website called gethasselhofftonumber1.com. The aim is for people to register their email address with the site. Once 75,000 have signed up, they will be sent a further email telling them to buy Looking For Freedom from Apple's iTunes Music Store.

If enough people buy the single, organisers hope it will get to number one without the star having to do any publicity surrounding it.

Forces behind the campaign, who remain anonymous, insist they are acting out of the 'goodness of their own hearts' and that they are not operating a marketing campaign on behalf of Hasselhoff.

"Think what he's given to the world," the website states. "Knight Rider. Baywatch. The reunification of East and West Germany. Untold laughter from forwarded e-mails of him in hotpants. He's given a lot. It's time we gave something back.

"Let's help him out with something that would mean the world to him. Something that would repay all the goodness he's given us over the years. A glittering prize that thus far eludes him. A top spot in the UK music charts. Let's get Hoff to number one."

"The Hoff" sang Looking For Freedom on top of the Berlin Wall during the German reunification ceremony in 1990 and the album went triple platinum in Europe.

Since then he has starred as scheming lawyer Billy Flynn in the West End musical Chicago, and appeared in the Broadway musical Jekyll and Hyde.
